Several blogs have noted the plans announced today to update the NIV (opposing perspectives at Jim West and συνεσταυρωμαι). I’m ambivalent. I think it’s a great thing to want to improve on a translation, but I have a feeling it’s not going to improve on things like this:
Phil 2:6 – Who, being in very natureª God, did not feel equality with God something to be grasped.
ª – Or, “in the form of”
The final clause kind of indicates which translation of ἐν μορφῇ the translators think is legitimate, despite the actual meaning of the word μορφή: “form,” “shape,” “figure,” “appearance.”
