The British Museum Probably Won’t Get the Cyrus Cylinder Back

Past Horizons reports on a developing story from the Circle of Ancient Iranian Studies (HT Stephen Smuts). The British Museum loaned the Cyrus Cylinder to Iran for an exhibition in Tehran, and Iran has recently asked for an extension on the loan. The troubling aspect of this request lies in the fact that the Iran’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee just voted to formally cut diplomatic ties with Great Britain. I have to agree with Stephen; it certainly doesn’t look good for the British Museum (but then, a lot of people consider this stuff stolen, anyway).

Oh my. Given the history of Iran’s confiscation of ancient artifacts, what made Britain ever think they would get it back?! It is my understanding that it is difficult for the scientific community to even investigate Iran’s ancient lands.

I don’t know what Iran’s history is with ancient artifacts, but their rhetoric over the past few years doesn’t instill me with that much confidence.
